On a brisk Friday morning, I prepared for a\u00a0three-day bike trip across the northeastern countryside of Mont\u00e9r\u00e9gie.<\/strong>\u00a0I had heard that the\u00a0Longueuil \u2013 Sorel-Tracy \u2013 Mont-Saint-Hilaire<\/strong>\u00a0triangle<\/strong>\u00a0is an excellent\u00a0fall<\/strong>\u00a0cycling route<\/strong>, and the forecast was calling for three beautiful, sunny days.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Day 1 – Longueuil to Sorel-Tracy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As the days are now shorter, I decided to take a bus (with a bike rack) directly from Longueuil to Varennes. I chose this alternative to reduce the number of kilometres I would have to ride to Sorel-Tracy on my first day. And so I began my journey at\u00a0La Riveraine<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, a stunning bike path that runs along the St. Lawrence River. It was set to be a sunny day with much to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My backdrop to the right was the sunrise low on the horizon, where I could also make out mont Saint-Hilaire. In\u00a0Verch\u00e8res<\/strong>, like with most of this route, there are many\u00a0ancestral homes<\/strong>\u00a0to admire. The parks in each municipality along the route are perfect spots to relax and watch the boats on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorel-Tracy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0Contrecoeur<\/strong>, I satiated my hunger at the restaurant Au Gueuleton, where I could enjoy a view of the river. I then rode along a less enjoyable section of road where the asphalt needs resurfacing, but fortunately this wasn\u2019t for long. I stopped at\u00a0parc r\u00e9gional des Gr\u00e8ves<\/a><\/strong> in Contrecoeur\u00a0<\/strong>where I took a short stroll along part of the network of hiking paths. With a pine forest, a peatland and 80\u00a0species of bird, the park has astonishingly rich ecosystems. It\u2019s worth a visit!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Route Verte<\/strong>\u00a0then brought me to\u00a0rivi\u00e8re Richelieu<\/strong>, the largest waterway south of the St. Lawrence. In the late afternoon, I arrived in Sorel-Tracy, where I visited the\u00a0Biophare<\/a><\/strong>, a museum dedicated to the islands of lac Saint-Pierre<\/strong>. Biophare highlights the heritage of Sorel-Tracy and unique natural characteristics of the Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve, a\u00a0site recognized by UNESCO<\/strong>. I was surprised to learn that one of\u00a0the most well-known heronries in North America<\/strong>\u00a0is right here in the Sorel-Tracy region.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
